RTP Capital members lead Triangle angel investing in 2013 with about $2 million invested in 15+ startups; expands board and membership base

February 4, 2014

Research Triangle Park NC, January 30, 2014 — The growth in angel investment in the Triangle is the result of active investors working together to find and fuel promising young companies. For RTP Capital Associates, the leading angel network in the Triangle, 2013 was a year of expansion and increased investment momentum. Driving activity and deal flow was membership growth from 27 up to 42 active accredited investors including some of the area’s most successful entrepreneurs and experienced angel investors including Andy Schwab, David Gardner and Tom Lotrecchiano. From information technology and life sciences to retail and medical devices, the members of RTP Capital represent the subject matter expertise and contacts to support a wide spectrum of early ventures.

“A strong angel investing community is built on the partnership between investors and entrepreneurs,” states Elaine Bolle, RTP Capital President. Bolle continues, “We had a record number of companies approach us in 2013 and the quality of these opportunities has continued to improve…our companies and entrepreneurs really value the expertise we continue to bring to them.”

After receiving an investment from RTP Capital in November, Thad Tarkington, the co-founder and CEO of FilterEasy.com stated, “RTP Capital was great to work with. The due diligence process was straight forward and really helped us to define our business…members from the group have been actively working with us each week helping with everything from marketing strategy to office space.”

RTP Capital members invest as individuals or with a group of members. The group also has a strong commitment to syndication among other angel groups in the area such as Triangle Angel Partners (TAP) and IMAF-RTP.

The group predicts that 2014 should be an even better year for both local angel investing and RTP Capital as the momentum continues to build. This January, RTP Capital has already moved three early stage companies into its due diligence process. To support this increased activity, RTP Capital will continue to selectively expand its membership and it has expanded its board of directors to seven:

  • Elaine Bolle — President
  • Mark Friedman — Treasurer and Co-Chair Investment Committee
  • Hank Jones — Secretary and Co-Chair Membership Committee
  • Andy Schwab — Co-Chair Membership Committee
  • David Gardner — Co-Chair Investment Committee
  • Bobby Bahram
  • Katina Dorton

About RTP Capital Associates

RTP Capital is a group of accredited angel investors who meet to evaluate early stage opportunities, pool resources and expertise, socialize, and make a difference. This network is different from other local angel groups in that it does not have a finite fund but rather invests through member evergreen resources. This allows the group to engage with a wider variety of opportunities; and provide insight, guidance, and other strategic resources for seed and early-stage companies primarily in the Southeastern US.
